Well worth the money
This was a gift and recipient really likes the convenience of this grinder and what a good job it does. She uses it frequently to grind foods for her baby.

poisonous meat!!!
As others have said, the blades are shaving off metal from the grind disc and mixing it with your meat. Totally unacceptable.

Your own meat grinder!
I just received my Kitchenaid Food Grinder and used it for the first time last night! I'm a bit of a food geek and love getting all sorts of gadgets so I can make all sorts of interesting and healthy dishes. My theory is, if you can make it on your own, and you have the time, why not?

I read a ton of reviews, both positive and negative, about the grinder. I considered getting a hand crank grinder. I considered other standalone powered units. Ultimately, I decided on the FGA because I already have a stand mixer and I am not grinding large amounts of meat.

Judging from its performance last night, it was well worth the investment! This thing chugged through a pound of chuck, cut to about 1 1/2" chunks easily. Having never used a meat grinder before, I noticed that it is not a fast process. The meat comes out slowly - and with burgers, you need to run it through twice. This is not a negative, just something to be aware of. One recommendation is to have two bowls if you are grinding beef twice: one to catch the beef and one for holding it while you put it back through the grinder.

So I gave this 5 stars because it produced what I consider to be a really nice grind consistency to the meat. The burgers ended up tasting great. That being said, I would rate this item a 4.5, if I could. As other people have mentioned, the new plunger is too wide. It creates a vacuum which makes it difficult to push the meat down. It spits out some meat and air when you pull it out. Also, I'm not really sure why you need the special unlocking mechanism. Perhaps it comes in handy for extremely large batches of meat, which could cause the front assembly to get jammed with meat and fat. For me, the unit unscrewed by hand with no problem.

Also, I read reviews about certain units producing some sort of gray sludge. Thankfully, mine did not do this. However, when I first unpackaged the unit, I noticed that it smelled like metal lubrication, WD-40 or something. I gave the unit a really solid first-time cleaning, which is something you should do with new food gadgets, anyway.

Cleanup was easy. The unit came apart with no problem. Although you can put most parts of it in the dishwasher, I cleaned it by hand. I'll try the dishwasher on my next use.

All around, great product and fun to use!

Memorable Meat Loaves!
I bought my wife a new bright red KitchenAid Stand Mixer for a Christmas present a couple years ago. It doesn't get heavy use but looks real nice on the kitchen counter. One fellow joked about whether we mixed up concrete with such a huge mixture. Well, my wife had been using it mainly for mixing up baked goods. However, about a year ago we decided to get the grinder attachment for it so that we could grind our own meat.

Now we grind up hamburger out of some relatively cheap cuts of beef (flank, chuck roasts) and it's far superior to that available in meat markets. Grinding our own enables us to eliminate a lot of fat. Also, from a safety standpoint, we can be assured that our hamburger came from one animal, as opposed to store ground beef which may contain parts of up to a hundred animals. Plus we know the quality of the meat that goes into the ground meat. Believe me, I used to work in a supermarket that had it's own butcher shop and I've seen what may go into ground meat!

A second advantage is that my wife likes to mix several meats and other ingredients together for making meat loaf. Beef and lamb are good examples. Plus, of course she also grinds bread, onions and other things into the mixture. We've had some really memorable meat loaves. Plus, there's cutlets and burgers and what not all. This attachment has been a real useful thing.
